Earth Force partners from Chinquapin School

and Galena Park joins forces to restore a wetland habitat

The Chinquapin school senior class and some of the students from Galena Park took part in an Earth Force restoration project on a small island in Highlands, called Gilberts Landing. We planted California Bull Rush plants. We built fence out of chicken wire to surround the plants, and we put up wooden posts to hold the chicken wire up. The wire is needed for protection against the invasive species, especially the Grass Carp.

The purpose of this project was to restore the wetland habitat to its original state. It was inundated by water because of subsidence. Because of the subsidence the island is getting smaller and the habitat is being lost. This is just one of many ways that you can help restore a habitat that has been destroyed by invasive species or subsidence.
